The citizens of Clarke County voted to create a 9-1-1 system in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s. After years of hard work and dedication by the local 9-1-1 Board and staff, the Clarke County 9-1-1 Center took its first live 9-1-1 call May 9, 2001. Clarke County is served by an Enhanced 9-1-1 System. The name, address and phone number of the telephone used to dial 9-1-1 is displayed on a computer screen at the 9-1-1 center if you have a traditional wired telephone. Cell phones display your location subject to exceptions. The Clarke County 9-1-1 Center is located on the 3rd Floor of the Clarke County Courthouse and is partially funded by a surcharge on all telephone services that touch 9-1-1. The monies are collected by the telephone companies directly in the amount of 1.74 per line and sent to the Alabama State 911 Board which disperses the funds to the Emergency Communication Districts statewide. All of Clarke County is covered by 9-1-1 service, it does not matter if you live in a city or unincorporated area, 9-1-1 will proved access to your local emergency agencies.

What to expect when dialing 9-1-1 from a cell phone?
Most cell phones display your phone number depending on the wireless carrier. Cell phones are not as precise as a traditional telephone and you should be prepared to give a location if you call from a cell phone.
What if I call from a cell phone and do not know my exact location?
With some wireless calls, our new mapping system will pinpoint the caller’s position.
How will the dispatcher know what agency to call for the emergency being reported?
By combining location information with questions asked for the caller, the Call-Taker determines which emergency agency, or agencies, should respond to the scene. The department or departments are then notified by the dispatcher to respond to the said emergency.
Over 95% of calls are dispatched within 90 seconds of being answered.
Tours of the 9-1-1 center are available from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. 9-1-1 Communication Officers are available upon prior notification, to come and speak at your event.
